After bingeing the !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! build series on YouTube, I was looking at inexpensive mod-worthy cars on Craigslist. The most interesting that I’m not already familiar with were a couple Impreza 2.5 RS. Anyone familiar with these, are they legit? Good community/aftermarket? Major problems?

Seriously not familiar with it? Buy it already.

I never really paid attention to the Subuarus. I was a VW guy from childhood, then started looking at RWD cars. I’m not looking for anything right away, but just curious about the opportunities for when my S2000 days are over (if ever).
The ASS2000 guys encountered what I had already heard about: doing a chassis refresh (bushings etc.) is a horrible nightmare on the S2000.

The 2.5RS is a serious future classic, especially if you can find a 2 door. It’s a Subaru EJ Boxer, so stupid well supported. The community.... Well... How bro-ey are you?

I was looking at getting one as well. The prices on wrxs have come down so much that I think I might go with one of those....

Avoid the Subaru Bro community and join the rally community. Much better people.

look out for blown headgaskets and spun bearings and rod knock and otherwise not working motors

2 door 2.5 RS cars are starting to get expensive if they are in great shape...I expect that trend to continue. I have a love/hate relationship with Subarus. On the plus side, they are like Legos. Most engines, transmissions, misc parts bolt right up and fit almost every chassis. On the negative side, you will get familiar with taking them apart and putting them back together. Used Subarus are fairly expensive in decent shape, and a ton of them have been thrashed.
Source: Have had a couple Outbacks, WRXs, and recently purchased the world’s cheapest clean title STi. (Disclaimer: I’m not actually a Subaru fan...)

If you want to leave it stock or near-stock, it’s a fun and balanced car that has a few mechanical reliability issues (head gaskets). If you want to mod, the suspension has great potential but the power potential exists almost entirely in different engine swaps.

I would be more looking for suspension, chassis, brakes, etc. rather than power.

Totally agree. Seems like everything on NASIOC turns into an argument.

If there isn’t much rust, that is a great deal in my area.

I hate the non rally portion of the subaru community. However it is well worth it to head out to some of your local rallycross events. The people there actually understand what makes subarus good cars compared to the bros who think their beat to shit 300k mile bugeye wrx which has been stanced to the point it scrapes are rally cars.

Then innumerable is about the right way to put it. Just in upcycling stock parts alone, you could do driveline swaps from later STis, brake swaps from STis or GD WRXs, chassis reinforcements from STIs, JDM cars, and Subaru’s own racing and Group-N parts, and that’s before we even get into the aftermarket. Whiteline will sell you a lightened and stiffened version of essentially every moving suspension piece on the car: lateral links, control arms, sway bars, bushings and mounts, you name it. You can get coilovers in any price range from $400 ricer specials up to $2300 Ohlins. There is essentially no limit to what you can do with the Impreza chassis.

Buy it. (my $2K impreza)
Rally it
Headgaskets in the ej25 will need to be replaced.
Get all your other parts from the bro community who replace oem parts with stance parts..

It’s basically a non-turbo WRX, they are insanly fun to drive, nice torque from the engine and very planted suspension. 10/10 have honned, will hone again.

I’ve liked them due to watching rally in the late 90s. I think they look better than the bug eye cars too. Its hard to find decent ones in the Midwest, but as others have said, they have a very strong aftermarket. If its in good shape it will likely be a lot of fun.
